About OSA

One Step Ahead, Together

OSA Defensive Training is a small, independent training company in Northeast Ohio. A few instructors, hundreds of students since 2014, and one simple belief: preparation should feel empowering, not intimidating.

Our Story

Years ago, I sat through a concealed carry class and left frustrated.

Not because the material was hard — because of how it was taught. In my experience, firearms training came in two flavors. There was the stereotypical “gun guy” running his class like a boot camp, all bravado and intimidation, more interested in impressing you than teaching you. And there was the other extreme: the bare-minimum, check-the-box class that got you a certificate and taught you almost nothing worth keeping.

Neither one served the people who actually needed training most — everyday folks who wanted to protect themselves and their families, but who walked in nervous, uncertain, and maybe a little afraid of the firearm in front of them.

I knew there had to be a better way. So in 2014, OSA Defensive Training was born, with a simple mission: make self-defense with a firearm less scary, more attainable, and honestly, more comfortable.

Why “One Step Ahead”

People ask about the name. Here’s the truth behind it: there is no finish line in training. Nobody ever “arrives.” Not me, not you, not anyone. The best any of us can hope for is to stay sharp enough to be one step ahead of the threat. That idea shapes everything we do — training here isn’t a one-time event you check off a list. It’s a practice you build, at your own pace, for the rest of your life.

Who I Am

I’m probably not who you picture when you think “firearms instructor” — and that’s exactly the point.

I’m an executive with a demanding corporate career. A busy dad. An aspiring travel blogger. Someone juggling a full life and a long-distance relationship, just like you. I don’t live in tactical gear, and I don’t expect my students to. I built OSA for real people with real lives, because that’s who I am — and because I believe the person teaching you should remember what it feels like to be the nervous one in the room.

Why I Still Do This

After more than a decade, the answer is simple: the ah-ha moment.

It’s watching someone walk in on a Saturday morning carrying fear they’ve held for years — and watching that fear turn into focus, then confidence, then a grin they can’t hide when it finally clicks: I can do this.

I’ve seen it happen over and over, and it never gets old. That moment is why OSA exists.

If you’ve been putting off training because it felt intimidating, overwhelming, or just not “for you” — you’re exactly who I started this for. Come as you are. We’ll take it one step at a time.

And we’ll keep you one step ahead.

What We Believe

Real Value, Not Fake Value

Every class, drill, and member benefit has to earn its place. If it doesn’t genuinely make you safer or more confident, we don’t offer it.

Kind Beats Loud

Nobody learns well while being barked at. Our classes are patient, welcoming, and honest about what everyday preparedness actually looks like.

Neighbors, Not Numbers

We stay small on purpose. When you join OSA, we are committed to helping you learn, build confidence and grow your skill set as a protector and capable person.

Official USCCA Partner

OSA Defensive Training is an Official Partner of the United States Concealed Carry Association. That’s why every OSA Shield membership includes USCCA Elite — unlimited criminal defense funds, $2,000,000 in self-defense liability insurance, and compensation while you’re in court — as a built-in benefit, not an upsell.
